The IPL 4-in-1 is an intense pulsed light system with four functions: IPL hair removal, pigmentation, acne-prone skin care and skin rejuvenation. It takes the three functions of the IPL 3-in-1 and adds pigmentation work, which makes it the broader of the two IPL systems for clinics where uneven tone and dark spots come up often.

An IPL system does not produce a laser beam. It releases a controlled flash of broad-spectrum light, and filtering narrows that light to suit what the operator is aiming at. For hair reduction, the melanin in hair absorbs it. For pigmentation, the melanin concentrated in surface spots absorbs the light instead; the pigment typically darkens and then sheds as the skin renews, which is how IPL is used to help improve the look of sun spots and uneven tone. For rejuvenation and acne-prone skin, the light is used to help refresh the look of texture and calm the appearance of redness and breakouts.

IPL targets melanin, so darker and tanned skin needs cautious settings, and some pigment concerns are better referred to a dermatologist before any light is used. A trained operator should follow the manufacturer's instructions, use gel as directed, make sure everyone in the room wears IPL-rated eye protection, and clean the handpiece between clients.
