The Portable Pico / Q-Switch Laser is a compact laser for pigment and tattoo work, sized for smaller clinics that want a pulsed laser without giving a corner of the room to a floor-standing tower. Both approaches rely on extremely short pulses of laser light. A Q-switched laser releases its energy in nanosecond bursts; a pico laser works in picoseconds, shorter again. Pulses this brief are absorbed by tattoo ink or excess pigment and shatter it into smaller fragments, which the body's own clearance processes carry away gradually over a course of sessions. The same short-pulse principle powers the carbon peel, in which a thin carbon lotion is spread over the face and the laser is passed across it, a popular facial session for the look of oily skin, enlarged pores and dullness.
